Happy Birthday Sam!!!!

Five years ago today, my son Sam was born. My husband and I woke up early in the morning to head to the hospital. I was being induced, because my blood platelets were dropping too low, and my doctor was worried that I would bleed out if they dropped any lower.

We groggily drove to the hospital, stopping by Dutch Bros. along the way, so my husband could buy a coffee. The man at the coffee kiosk wished us luck as we drove away.

I got checked into the hospital, saw the doctor briefly, and the pitocin was started. I was excited, certain that my labor would progress quickly, since labor had been so fast with my daughter.

Minutes ticked by. Then hours. When the doctor came to check on me at noon, I had only dilated 1/2 cm. Not even enough for him to break my water! I was discouraged.

The day droned on. We had the TV on in the background, switching back and forth between the World Series and the news coverage of the Baltimore sniper shootings. My contractions waxed and waned, never really getting into a good rhythm.

The doctor came back at 5:30. I was finally dilated to 2 cm. He took a chance and broke my water. Suddenly I was in pain. I begged for drugs. After about 20 minutes, the doctor consented to giving me a narcotic to help ease the pain. I remember the contractions being painful, but I also remember being able to rest in between.

Around 8:00 I began pushing. At 8:15 pm. Sam came into the world, crying like a billy-goat. The nurses laid him on my belly, and he immediately peed all over me. He’s been a little stinker ever since.
