When I set out my goals for this year, I mentioned that I was going to begin my home organization goals by going through the book 30 Days to a Simpler Life. At the rate I’m going, it’s going to be more like 30 weeks to a simpler life, but that’s OK. I gave myself a year to get organized, so I may as well use the whole year and do it right, right?
So far I’ve worked through the introduction and chapter one. The introduction was a fun read, as it went over different types of simplifiers. I found that I didn’t fit into any one category. I think I’m a wanna-be “Organized Simplifier”. The Organized Simplifier is a person who tends to be very busy, who likes to have a system for everything, and who is an early adapter of the latest trends and technology. I’m generally a couple of steps behind, but I wanna-be all of those things.
I know you all want to know how the simplification process is going, so I’ll update you. The first chapter of 30 Days to a Simpler Life is all about getting stuff out of your house. Fill up a shopping bag and get it out of the house, the authors say. Incidentally, that’s one of the things Flylady preaches with her 27 Fling Boogies. What’s a 27 Fling Boogie? It’s when you go through your house as quickly as you can with a trash bag in hand and find 27 things to toss. It’s very effective.
So that’s what I’ve been focusing on. A couple of days ago, I started to clean Liz’s room, and let me tell you I found tons of stuff to get rid of. I filled up a huge box. It felt good to get it out of the house. And it’s so easy, I think I’ll fill up one shopping bag a day to toss or donate, until everything I don’t use or love has left the house!
Have you ever tried a 27 fling boogie? Why don’t you make today the day?

Bucky and I went through his closet this past weekend and filled a box with too small clothes. It helped his closet but it got added to the huge piles of junk in the garage. (SIGH)
I like the idea of filling up a bag a day and getting the stuff out of the house. I might have to try that.
Good luck on getting rid of some clutter.

Good for you for going through the clothes! I hate that task! It seems like clutter is a never-ending problem, doesn’t it?

Well hi Lynnae! I can finally comment over here again! I’m not sure what has been going on, but on my end, your comments link has been disappearing : P (Glad to see it back!)
I’m doing this same thing. I signed up at the Flylady site last October and then got sidetracked with illnesses and the holidays. I also started working through the Peter Walsh book at the same time and have just gotten back into that.
Right now Peter is trying to convince me that if I haven’t opened that giant container of fabric in over 5 years, I’m probably not going to. Despite all my lovely project plans to the contrary. *sigh*

Ah, Peter Walsh. He’s the one who said “respect your space.” I’m not respecting my space at the moment. lol
I’m not sure what was up with my comments. I think my old social bookmark button may have been covering the link. I switched buttons, so hopefully you won’t have an issue anymore. But let me know if you do!

I thought that meant that you go fling 27 boogies (boogers) around the house, I’m not about to do that! Sorry, I have kids, what can I say?

@Mary Lu - believe me…that was my first thought too! LOL

That’s funny! I’ve read flylady before too, and I think the 27 fling boogie is more like putting on the music and “boogying” as you’re finding 27 things to get rid of. I’ve filled bags of stuff before, but I’ve got to get moving out of the computer chair to get something done around here! Ha. I definitely need to simplify…are you doing one room at a time or just hit and miss? I’ve had some success at one room at a time, but before I get to the 2nd or 3rd room to declutter, the first one has stuff in it again. (my 4 yr. old) I’m bad about taking the stuff out of my bedroom closet to go through, and ending up with a clothes mountain at the end of my bed for days. Not a peaceful bedroom, let me tell you. Anyway, glad you’re working on things, it helps me get inspired to get going too.

For me, it’s 15 minutes. Sometimes there’s so much to do I become paralyzed. But if I take 15 minutes to do SOMETHING, anything, I can accomplish so much. It’s very motivating to discover how much you can do in such a short amount of time. I think I got the 15 minute idea from a book called, “Stop Screaming at the Microwave”
